Jockstrap vs. Compression Shorts for Lifting: What to Wear on Leg Day

DINGO Camo men's compression brief

You've dialed in your program, your pre-workout and your playlist. But what you wear under your shorts matters more than most guys think, especially on leg day. Here's how jockstraps, compression shorts and compression briefs stack up for lifting.

Compression shorts

Compression shorts are the gym default: tight, mid-thigh length, worn under or instead of regular shorts.

Pros: leg coverage, reduce chafing on long runs.

Cons: lots of fabric, run hot, and the leg can roll up during deep squats. Front support depends on the brand, and many are just tight shorts with no real pouch.

Jockstraps

The original athletic underwear. A supportive front pouch, a waistband and two leg straps, with an open back.

Pros: the most front support of any option, excellent airflow, and nothing to roll up or bunch in a deep squat.

Cons: no leg coverage, so pair with shorts that have some length if you're worried about chafing.

Compression briefs

The middle ground: full coverage front and back, no leg, with a close, second-skin fit.

Pros: strong support, nothing to roll, and you can wear them all day at work and straight into the gym.

Cons: less airflow than a jock on really hot days.

The verdict for leg day

Compression shorts Jockstrap Compression brief
Front support Varies Highest High
Airflow Low Highest Medium
Rolls up in squats Often No No
Wear all day Not really Yes Yes
  • Heavy squats and deadlifts: jockstrap or compression brief. Locked in, nothing moving.
  • HIIT, cardio and hot sessions: jockstrap, for airflow.
  • Straight from the office: compression brief, so there's no change needed.
